The explosion of digital photography technology have made a lot of people become better photographers, even average Joes and Janes are able to produce decent quality pictures with great resolution by the help of relatively cheap digital cameras. However, this positive improvement also created new challenges to professional photographers or photography enthusiasts to create even better images. Even though high quality photography equipment has become more accessible to regular people, what really makes the difference is the skills behind the camera. So here are three tips to help you improve your photography skills significantly, so you can separate yourself from average people with a fancy camera:

1. Learn to use proper lighting

Lighting is one of the key elements for a good photograph, even the most beautiful object you can find will not look so good on camera without proper lighting. Unfortunately this is also one of the most difficult things to master in photography. You can start by learning to make the best use of the strongest light source available for us, which is the sun. "The golden hour" to work with the sunlight is 1 hour before dawn and 1 hour before dusk. The position of the sun at these times of day is so perfect that it provides even light that's not too bright nor too dark, so you can make great pictures. However, professional photographers will be able to make the best use of any lighting condition by applying the right settings to the equipment. With lots of practice, you will also have the chance to reach that level.

2. Maximize the photo quality from the start

Know the ins and outs of your equipment so you can maximize your photo quality. Set the camera to the highest quality, use the highest possible resolution and also make use of the extra quality settings available, such as Fine or Superfine, if your camera has them, there's no reason for you not to use them. If possible, always use RAW or TIFF format instead of JPEG to make sure the image quality is not lost.

3. Image editing

This is another important aspect of modern photography. Retouching your photos is like the icing on the cake, this is the final touch that will make your great photos look more stunning. So get your hands on some image editing software like Adobe Photoshop Elements or Corel Paint Shop Pro and learn how to use them to produce better images.
